Interaction Designer

Kettle is hiring an Interaction Designer!

Job Location: New York, NY

Kettle is a growing digital agency focused on finding great people to deliver fantastic interactive products. We are a passionate, fearless, multi-disciplinary team advocating for users to the benefit of our clients. Based in the heart of Soho, we work in an open, collaborative, creative environment. Our clients include leading brands and digital innovators such as American Express, Sesame Street, McGraw-Hill, The New Museum, YouTube, and many more. Check out our website for a selection of recent work.

We are looking for a full-time Interaction Designer with a portfolio that combines strong interaction and interface design skills. You’re comfortable putting together an interactive HTML prototype, but can also simply sketch your ideas for flows and layouts on a whiteboard, or whip up a UI element in Photoshop. Your work should demonstrate your understanding of what makes an engaging, user-friendly product with simple interactions and on-brand messages.

This is an amazing opportunity to learn and make a difference by helping a fast-growing community of entrepreneurs exchange advice. This project is run like a startup, with the reach of a Fortune 100 company. It’s a truly unique opportunity, but we will tell you more when we meet you.

Your responsibilities as an Interaction Designer include:

  • Define product objectives based on the client brief, research (analytics, competitive, category), brainstorming and instincts. User research experience a plus.
  • Sketch best practice interaction models and interfaces that reflect a solid understanding of user behaviors across platforms (responsive web layouts, mobile apps).
  • Design user-centric documentation including sitemaps, user flows, wireframes. Ability to develop functional prototypes is a big plus (HTML, CSS, jQuery, Bootstrap, …)
  • Create documentation about the product for Design and Development Teams and ensure the team understands all use cases and scenarios to design and develop against.
  • Support the Design team to ensure that Kettle’s quality level and philosophy is present in ALL deliverables (from concepts to final builds). You will be teamed up with UI designers that will help you bring your ideas to a pixel-perfect state, but you should be proficient in Photoshop.
  • Present your work internally and to clients; clearly articulate and defend design decisions.
  • Stay on top of best-in-class interactive design and technologies.

A few things we are looking for in the right candidate:

  • Passion for solving complex design problems elegantly.
  • Rely on existing usability standards and web technologies.
  • Ability to rapidly mock up different sketches for a layout and discuss them intelligently.
  • Proficient at a standard wireframing application (ideally OmniGraffle).
  • An understanding of Lean UX methodology (sprints, epics, prototyping, test and learn, …)
  • Well organized, meticulous, and a problem solver.
  • Ability to manage multiple briefs simultaneously.
  • Thrive in a collaborative team environment
  • Have strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills, both verbal and written.

More about the job:

  • This is a full-time job
  • Candidate must be able to work onsite in downtown Manhattan, and be a US citizen or have a work permit.
  • Candidate must also understand that this is not a 9-5 job: we take a lot of pride in our work, which sometimes requires to put a bit more hours to deliver the right solutions. But we make the work environment fun and enjoyable.
  • Competitive compensation based on experience.
